The Master of Technology Entrepreneurship & Innovation (MTEI) is a graduate business degree focused on technology - the only one of its kind on Canada's East Coast. MTEI program is eligible for three-year Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada.  

This program is designed to allow you complete your studies in just 16 months of full-time study (4 semesters). It gives you advanced knowledge in the business of technology and helps you to develop critical skills that are highly sought after by employers. These include the ability to think strategically, to solve problems decisively, to communicate clearly, and to successfully lead others.  

The curriculum includes: 

  • Classes on alternating Fridays and Saturdays of each week over 8 months 
  • 1 of 3 experiential learning pathways: Applied Project (Your Startup), Internship or a Thesis, providing practical, hands-on experience to bridge academic learning with real-world application.

  • MTEI 5580: Globalization and Innovation Systems 

Once your coursework is completed, choose one of the following: 

Applied Project 

Complete the MTEI degree in as little as a year with this option. Launch a new business, product or service. Through milestone presentations, you’ll refine your idea with feedback from faculty and industry. Your journey culminates in a final capstone presentation, where you showcase your venture to the ecosystem. 

Internship Project 

Apply concepts and theories learned during the program in an organizational setting over six months. You’ll gain industry exposure and get hands-on learning opportunities under the co-supervision of a SMU faculty member and a qualified mentor at the partner organization. 

Thesis Option 

Under the supervision of an approved faculty member, identify a technology or business-related problem and write a thesis in an area of technological entrepreneurship and innovation. Gain and refine valuable research skills with this option, even prepare yourself for the pursuit of a PhD.
